Earlier today I swapped the displays between two iphone se 2020s. To my great disappointment, the screen on the working phone no longer functioned properly (colors look terrible, could not change brightness, home button not working) because the screen was bound to the other hardware. Thanks for making repairs impossible and hating your customers, apple
And yet suckers keep buying apple products even though this is the most well known thing about apple products for 30 years
It’s almost like…your choices… impact later?
It’s actually what they like about iPhones. They just call it instead “it all works together” as if a tiny bit of convenience is worth 97% of your freedoms
I tried suggesting to my mom and then girlfriend somewhat recently that they’d be happier on android phones. I did that only because they both complained that iPhones keep getting worse.
Just the thought of one or two minor inconveniences shut down the conversation immediately. Shit like “I get texts on my iPad and phone now and it’s easy to respond on either”…??? Beyond insane to me
Yeah the lock in is sad. Apparently it’s really important that airdrop exists even when people only use it to mess with their coworkers. Signal is too much effort to install or learn. Etc etc.
it does take time, as an early google adopter it took until the early 2010s before I’d had enough of their trash and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I’d fully decoupled from Google, but it’s not like I worked on it for a decade. I worked on it for a few hours, a day or two per year, for a decade. Most of the switching effort is time. (Ok here’s how you reach me now. No mom I don’t use this address I use the other one now just update your contacts. Etc etc)
swings and round abouts… tbh i love this feature of apple hardware because it pretty much means there’s no point to stealing an iphone: you can’t even part it out and sell it in bits… i’ve left my phone in random places all the time and i’ve never been worried it’s going to get stolen
totally understand that people have the opposite POV though: that it’s your device and you should be able to do whatever you want with it, and that locking down parts is a method to ensure apple status in the loop with repairs and overpriced parts
i think both points of view are valid
I’m pretty sure any iPhone and it’s parts are worth way more than any android. If you had a fully modular android phone that is easy to take apart it still wouldn’t be worth much because there’s no market for it since maybe a dozen people have that phone.
but like… there’s literally no market for apple parts because you can’t really use them for repairs or anything at all - it’s ewaste unless it’s in the original device, and the whole phone is ewaste unless it’s logged into the registered apple account - you can’t just wipe it or anything because of all the serial numbers etc
Good old parts pairing!
Took long enough.
Be fun to see how they try to maliciously comply. Funnier to see how they get slapped around by the EU!
I really want the EU to bar them. Fuck apple and their only way of making money: preventing any choice they deem less profitable to them
Sadly, almost certainly not going to happen. Maybe a “cost of doing business” fine…
