Critics have said the US decision to retreat from the region has led to a greater likelihood of conflict

As Israeli jets struck targets in Iran on Friday morning, the US moved quickly to distance itself from Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to target Tehran in an escalation that threatens an all-out war in the Middle East.

The unilateral strikes indicated a collapse of Donald Trump’s efforts to restrain the Israeli prime minister and almost certainly scuttled Trump’s efforts to negotiate a deal with Iran that would prevent the country from seeking a nuclear weapon.

It also will probably lead to an Iranian retaliation that could develop into a larger war between Israel and Iran, a new conflict that Trump has publicly sought to avoid.

“collapse of trumps efforts to restrain netanyahu”… right. If netanyahu did this against US pleas, then why is the US shooting down the Iranian reprisal? Seems like they’d take trump more seriously he didn’t just support them regardless.

What sane person ever believed that Trump was willing or able to restrain Israel or its leadership?

He is definitely able to do it. Over the past months he’s shown that he can act unilaterally on pretty much anything, especially on foreign policy, and no one stops him. He could stop weapons shipments to Israel tonight and if that happened Israel wouldn’t be able to support it’s 4 front war on the region and have to come to the negotiating table. He just doesn’t because he’s a coward and afraid of the Israel lobby.

He’s already stopped aid to ukraine, no reason he can’t do the same for Israel.

Implying that the United States in any way had attempted to actually stop Israel is journalistic misconduct.

and implying that the united states didn’t help is willful ignorance at best since its diplomats worked to convince the iranians that it wasn’t going to happen.

It’s probably opposite, where Israel was told to do it in order to continue getting support (I say this based on my expert tv show/movie knowledge)

One of the dumbest headlines I’ve read all year. The US administration is supporting all of this.

I wonder what happens if everyone in the region starts lobbing missiles at isreal. How long can they maintain their air defense under a saturated attack? It takes time to reload those systems. A dumb missile launched in isreals direction requires a expensive one to intercept it. All it takes is the powers in the region to collectively decide they have taken enough shit from them and isreal is screwed. Not that they don’t deserve it. You can bet trump wont get involved. He needs those troops to put a knee on our collective necks.

I know they all have their hatred of one another. It would only take a two month love affair to do isreal in. Probably not going to happen but you never know.

That was egypt and jordan. Not all of them. At that time iran was a US puppet state along with several others. Egypt like the way things are now. So there is no way they would get involved.

Trump needs a war he didn’t start that he can get involved in so he can claim to be a wartime president. “Can’t hold an election when we are at war!”

There’s also a video going around now of him in 2011 claiming Obama was going to start a war with Iran, due to his incompetence at negotiating, right before the election to boost his popularity.

He’s projecting more then an imax movie theater.

This also fulfills the anti-prophecy of him calling himself the most peaceful president ever. He only ever presides over peaceful times.

The US never actually tried to stop Israel. They have the levers but didn’t do any of them. From how trump is speaking about the attack, it seems like he wanted this to put more pressure when it comes to the negotiations

This makes it seem like USA had no say in this when they have directly worked with netanyahu’s government to keep a tight grip in middle east and is aiding the war effort from closed doors
