I know I’m a completely jaded and bitter old Gen Xer for saying this but, there’s never going to be such a thing as a better social media app because social media (I’m referring generally to the suite of apps, not just Pixelfed).
It should be a co-op.
I think it’s just a matter of time if pixelfed really takes off (which I hope fingers crossed)…
As long as people are migrating to the fediverse…
Is there a repo to get the official app on F-droid? Or is it play store only? (And why)
Great questions!
I would assume there are no plans to release on free stores like F-droid because the people behind these projects usually don’t care about the ecosystem; they’re just in it for the money! It’s all auto-pilot for them, which means releasing only on the company stores “just because” that’s what everyone else is doing.
I’d love to be proven wrong, but I won’t hold my breath!
Those are some pretty bad faith assumptions
In the current state of the world you can’t blame him/her. He’s just describing enshittification which is the norm in social media
Only if you were born yesterday!
Have you heard about “arguing in bad faith”? When it’s an entirely different person or entity from those that screwed us in the past it’s unfair on them to assume they’re in it to screw people over especially when it comes to open source federated platforms where cutting one head means it can still work fine.
Hey man, neither of us can see the future.
It’s totally possible I’m incorrect, I even said that at the bottom of my text.
If I’m wrong, great. But I won’t hold my breath because I wasn’t born yesterday. Seeing this guy say “not for sale” while begging for money is a very tired stance to have, considering all the people who work harder than him and don’t rely on donations or sales.
I guess he just didn’t receive the right offer yet. Just wait until he gets offered millions.
Just because a lot of people sell their kidney if the price is high enough, there indeed are people true to their principles.
For me it’s this: if I can achieve my goals/dreams (which at least in my case are at least capped regarding money), why do I need more money?
Nice advertisement.
Pixelfed SMASH
Already nearly $75K:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pixelfed/pixelfed-foundation-2024-real-ethical-social-networks
Get him working on it full time lets gooo
I’m fairly sure that he’s already working full-time. But it would be really nice, if he’s not the only one, e.g. to reduce the bus-factor.
Why does it say $54K for me?
Says that for me too. Could it be the difference between USD and Canadian Dollars?
Yes. If you hover over the small $ next to the amount, it says “converted from CA$…”
Am Canadian, I see 78k so yes
Dunno. It’s $78K now.
54k for me too, weird.
Must be a time travel thing. Some advice for you, visitors from 24 hours ago: learn Dutch. The Netherlands conquered the world in the 18-hour war and English is a dying language. And stock up on whale blubber. You’re gonna need it.
Perfect. That’s the type of changes I can look forward to!
…and they said you were mad to hoard all that blubber!
So it claims to be foss but needs all that money? What’s the hype about and why should I care?
FOSS doesn’t mean “we do not accept voluntary donations.”
To me, they’re a lot like supporting a YouTube creator you like on a funding website like Ko-Fi (or that other one that starts with a P), you don’t pay to watch their content, you pay because you enjoy their content and want them to get better at it, and you get some freebies in return that never feel necessary for those who can’t afford or don’t want to spend money on them.
It’s also why on Bandcamp, you can choose to pay more than the asking price for a song/album if you really feel like it. You never need to, but you can because you care about the artist’s work.
FOSS can really benefit a lot from voluntary donations, especially since making software (especially good software) and maintaining it costs money. This is especially the case for a website that relies on maintaining servers and instances.
Yep, that’s pretty much how I see it too.
Are the concepts of costs and development foreign to you?
I’m a software engineer and I’ve participated in open source development.
So you’re just being an ass then?
I wouldn’t downvote an ignorant for asking a question, that’s actually praiseworthy.
But I will downvote an ignorant who somehow is so entitled that they think it’s others’ responsibility to enlighten him. Go lick a candle.
Never used Instagram. Could selfhosting Pixelfed be useful for sharing pictures between family members?
While I have not used this feature specifically - immich is great for self hosting photos
Immich was alright once I had manually set every account to be “Partners” with every other account. I plan to set it up again once I get hardware for the server so I can easily backup images/video from my phone (while at home anyway).
I think it has a container crutch. If it can install on a system and update like all my other stuff (automatically) then I’m in. I don’t have time to pop containers 6000km away with minimal tech support when they blow up.
It’ll be much easier to install immich than pixelfed
I thought the same thing til just earlier today!
What you wanna do is install docker engine, which installs docker locally on your server instead if someone else’s cloud. Following this you can spin it up using a self hosted container.
If you want it to be accessible outside your home network you can set up pivpn and wireguard to access it from anywhere, just VPN into the home network and connect to immich through there.
I rolled out immich in about an hour today using this, a few days ago I did jellyfin as well. Thinking about doing xmpp and email next
possibly, but that specific use-case has been solved with dedicated image hosting tools that allow sharable links https://photoview.github.io/
this is more decentralized social networks
This looks great. I have been using Nextcloud and FileBrowser for that.
There’s no privacy.
It’s posting your images to the world by default?
Yes, whatever you put up there is for public consumption. It’s closer to Twitter than Facebook.
So, I’ve been trying to set this up with a plan to self host without public access. Just to share family pictures. But I’m cutting a lot of corners to make it work for myself and my family only, since that’s my goal.
I would love to join, but the whole registration process fails at every turn. Mails aren’t sent, login pages just do refresh…please…just let me iiiiinn
Choose a smaller instance. The biggest one isn’t accepting people right now.
I also had this problem. I tried 3 small (<1k user) instances and never got a signup email from any of them. Almost began to wonder if Gmail was just blackhole filtering all of them.
I signed up on a smaller instance, and it took them like two weeks to confirm my account. But it does work now.
They might be? Federation isn’t great for all of the big boys.
It’s more a problem of aggressive spam filtering- “big name” email domains will automatically ignore traffic from every email server thats not part of a known proven white-list, ostensibly to stop spammers from spinning up new domains every few minutes to keep sending mails. So any small service, including a self hosted option for email, often gets conveniently blackholed by the monopoly and are not usable.
Same with me. Tried a week ago on a smaller instance and got nothing. Tried with another email this week and still nothing 🤷🏻♂️. I am not in a rush, was mostly wondering if I had been rejected for some reason.
That’s a bummer. I picked an instance from…
…and it was very painless and quick. Have you tried joining a different instance? Do you have an adblocker or JS blocker that might be fucking up the registration?
I got onto the biggest one (I think pixelfed.social) but it seems to be down frequently. When it works it’s fine. Figure it’s probably growing pains, I know lemmy was the same after the reddit exodus and it’s been much better lately.
I don’t know if I happened to just get lucky, but I was having issues in firefox mobile and had to temporary instal chrome for the account creation. Not sure if chrome actually fixed the issue or if the server just happened to come back up after I switched.
The server’s getting hammered today for sure. People on the server are posting at a rate of 5 posts per second. It’s wild.
Registrations are open though. The local timeline is filled with first posts from accounts created today.
Yeah, tried to sign up earlier this morning, and account creation and linkage seems to be rather fucky currently
They’re about to launch a second flagship server to relieve some of the stress on p.s. It sounds like it’ll be in the next day or two (but you never know with them).
Might be a good option if you’re still having trouble when they fire it up.
I had an issue but I got signed up like 20 minutes ago.

Clicking the link pushes a .bin file to me. That’s not how you do any of this.
The link works, what are you talking about?
Yes, please give the man some money so we can hire somebody and get some sleep.
