Linux@lemmy.ml•Which Linux distribution do you recommend for beginners?
1·21 days agoHonestly I fined macOS fine feature-wide but the defaults aren’t great for me so I tweaked many things and the annoying part of this is that I rely on multiple third party tools for what I consider should be native settings to change.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Which Linux distribution do you recommend for beginners?
1·21 days agoMaybe I don’t remember the defaults on macOS and assume my setup is macOS UX but it’s quite tweaked yeah. I find my config closer to Gnome than my memories of Windows. But I agree that Gnome is radially different and that’s what I’ve write in my comment.
Isn’t Cosmic based on Gnome? I have to try it, I was hyped when they announced it and now it’s realeased.
What about the DE used in ElementaryOS? ZorinOS Pro has some macOS themes and KDE is heavily flexible to replicate macOS’s UX.

3·22 days ago- ZorinOS (especially for Windows users)
- LinuxMint (especially for Windows users)
- Fedora (if users want something radically different than Windows or macOS, it’s closer to macOS than Windows tho)
- Bazzite (Fedora-based atomic distro, if most of usage is gaming)

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Why won’t Steam Machine support HDMI 2.1? Digging in on the display standard drama.
89·1 month agoYeah fuck the video codec mafia and all these proprietary shits like HDMI
Heroic has slow download from GoG and Epic on my machine too.
ZorinOS is doing awesome for begginers, LinuxMint is also a reliable option that might makes you learn more about GNU/Linux OSes

I think they were leftists activists charged for eco-terrorism but I don’t remember all the details but you should take a look. La Quadrature du Net has done some blogging and court things over this events of dark times.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•What software tools do you use that are gaming related?English
2·2 months ago- MangoHUD
- Heroic Game Launcher
- Ludusavi
- rdmodman
- Bottles
- Proton Plus and ProtonUp Qt
- GPU Screen Recorder
If you’re comming from Windows and don’t want to be too much distabilized ZorinOS is probably one of the best.
Other great choice are:
- bazzite
- Linux Mint
- Pop_OS!
However CAD on Linux is not great, there is some free tools but they are so much more limited than the proprietary windows suite of tools. Maybe WinBoat could make your software run good enough.
I mean you cannot fit Monero in the same bucket as the rest of the cryptocurrencies. No foundation, no company, no VCs, no pre-mined, CPU-based PoW, no major on/off ramp accepting it but still a strong currency with real usage outside speculation made by a community of builders. Can be life saving for some high risks profiles and honestly is the complete opposite of the cryptocurrency market, I’m thankful it exists.
Monero is based though
As long as they don’t sell that to people as “easy money multiplier, invest you’ll become rich in weeks” I’m okay. Won’t buy though

Linux Gaming@lemmy.ml•Valve launches the Steam Next Fest right on Windows 10 EOL because they hate me, specifically.
3·3 months agoWell if you’re daily driving Kubuntu and wants an Arch-based distro go for it, CachyOS is really popular these days.
I think it made sense for Valve to go with Arch for a custom Hardware with console-like experience cuz they can tweak it and optimize it in depth but for a desktop PC you won’t have big difference from a gaming perspective.
I’m not 100% sure about this but I think you could copy/backup the file that create all the non-steam link and metadata if you make the switch to another distro. But you’ll have to do some research I guess.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.ml•Valve launches the Steam Next Fest right on Windows 10 EOL because they hate me, specifically.
3·3 months agoDoesn’t change the fact that you will have a great experience from any of these distro when it comes to gaming. Most of the changes in UX come from the Desktop Environment (KDE Plasma, GNOME, Cinnamon, XFCE, etc…). Other difference are packages availablility but beside Steam which is on most distro package you will probably use Flatpaks anyway. Also you should be able to swap distro without loosing files and games.
So beside some minor changes you won’t notice much else. If it’s your first time on Linux I would suggest you Bazzite (or Mint).

And we are still waiting for RDNA4 on AMD’s APUs
