The algorithm part is a sticky point for me, because it’s always been my contention that you could directly map most of the systemic issues of social media with the rise of engagement algorithms.

In other words, reverse chronological order is the only way to do healthy social media in my opinion. (Or maybe I should say, healthiest). Algorithms introduce too many pernicious incentives. They optimize everything around the worst things.

Most people love algorithms though. And it seems most people don’t want to trade algorithms away. A reason that many fall off mastodon is the lack of an algorithm.

Mastodon does not have an algorithm. Or am I not being inclusive enough in my definition?

It sorta partially is. On Apple’s movie store you get the 3D version with the HD/4K version. So if your movies anywhere unlocks the HD/4K it should unlock the 3D too. As long as the publisher has put the 3D version up there. And many did as a result of the Vision Pro.

I have a bunch of 3D movies available on my Vision Pro, and I’ve never specifically bought one in 3D. Many came from digital codes.

Apple has the largest collection of 3D movies right now.

The thing is, new content with proper 3D isn’t being made much these days. I’d estimate Apple has the bulk of what exists available already.

They are also important for VR content. You need a lot of pixels to fill someone’s Field of View.

I hope many organizations and groups follow suit.

This is part of the fall of Twitter.

There were two paths for Twitter, in the eyes of many idealistic people like me. One path was something terrible like what happened with Musk. The second path was one that treated it as a public commons of the world.

That second path is how many grew to understand Twitter during its rise and peak. This is why there are so many situations where various public and governmental groups used it as a notification feed/system.

You can go on about how they should just start their own ActivityPub based solution, or move to bluesky or whatever. But it’s not that simple for all of them. Nor are all of the groups involved in posting these feeds technically savvy to do so. Twitter made it easy, and it made sense.

The article could have easily been just as absurd if it was about how people didn’t get the alert because the alerts were moved to a mastodon instance and people are upset because they don’t want to have to go through the trouble of picking a server. heh.

It’s so unfortunate that Twitter went this way. No more free and easy api, no more third party apps and tools. No more expectation that everyone is there. No more expectation that public alerts make sense there.

Yes, centralizing all of this is a big problem. And musk is just one example of why. But, it could have gone the other way.

When MKB commented on the situation, he avoided dropping the name PayPal. Seemingly on purpose. Just in case it would help him in the future.
