Its kind of a contrived distinction if you actually go by genetic science. Yes, the levantine Ashkenazi tribe existed over just enough generations to have a traceable genetic ancestry, but they started as a levantine bedouin genetic profile and most have intermingled a lot during their diaspora. Modern humans have been around for 300,000 years and judaism for 1% of that time so there just is no “pure blood” to start with. Especially not 3000 years ago in that particular heavily contested region.

Many studies have shown that some populations called “non jewish” in the levantine have more of what jewish people would claim are jewish ethnicity genetic indicators than the current batch of those who call themselves ashkenazi jews have. The israelis basically want to deny that jewish people are middle eastern.
