I realized that my comment kind of sounds like I’m calling Americans dumb or uneducated generally, but I was thinking specifically about civics, history, and economics classes and I never mentioned that. Those courses are either missing from the curriculum or heavily biased to the point that I think it’s natural for people to have a poor understanding of fascism.

My parents both had masters degrees, and I grew up in a house where “communist” was a slur and “anarchist” was a synonym for chaotic. They weren’t stupid or uneducated, but they had been significantly propagandized. My dad fully thinks that leftists are fascist. Hell, I learned through high school that the US had never lost a war. My history classes never got past 1945, with the exceptions of the moon landing and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

I’m an American immigrant in Germany, and I’ve come to realize that most Americans are very naive about government. The US has been very successful in the short time it’s been around as a country, and I don’t think most Americans really realize that it won’t always be like that. At the same time, the education system has been gradually but thoroughly gutted.

I hope we can wake up, but I worry we might need to see for ourselves before we can actually learn. I just hope the rest of the world doesn’t indulge us so long that we take everyone else with us.

Well shit, I never thought I’d value the German bureaucracy. I’m an immigrant who teaches German classes in Germany and they waived my language requirement. I was honestly surprised, I figured I would just pay the stupid money and have the most relaxed oral exam in my life, but they were somehow organized enough to recognize my master’s degree in German.

I married a German though, and getting the marriage license took about five months, and it was only valid for six weeks.

This is an article about Jewish leaders, not about the ADL. The ADL purports to speak in the defense of all Jews and Judaism, but they do not.

They didn’t deny the genocide, but asked why that’s relevant. Jewish people are separate from Israel, even though Israel wants to muddy the waters. It’s like blaming all of Christianity for the holocaust because hitler wanted to put a Christian veneer on it.

I know I have some strong biases that lean towards peace, and I’m confused sometimes why a comment of mine in the fediverse gathers double digit upvotes steadily only to plummet to the negatives overnight. I get old reddit botnet vibes on some topics.

That’s probably time zones. I’m in Europe, and I’ve noticed that if I post something that’s not in line with mainline American thinking, I’ll wake up to a bunch of downvotes. The same could be true for Oceania/Asia or Europe/africa, depending on where you are.

No right wing parties in Germany? I wish. Luckily, musk seems to be driving people away from afd (though bsw and fw are still problematic af), but I’m not holding out hope that they’re not just staying quiet out of shame. I guess we’ll see in a few weeks.

Edit: I can’t believe I forgot about the cxu, which is historically the most popular party and getting ever friendlier with the far right.

US-American fascism isn’t new for Latin America. I’m not surprised that there are good people there who can recognize and name it. Kudos to him for stating it so plainly and not trying to soften it.
