  • Can we exert more influence over China if we work with them?

We thought the same thing back in the late 90s and early 00s. It didn’t work out very well for us. It gave them the economic and technological means to surveil their people and build up their military, while we benefited from cheap goods, but at the cost of losing our manufacturing base and electing someone who probably has serious brain damage. Who will now run our country into the ground.

All in all, I expect serious damage to our country, and China to go after Taiwan with their considerable military to grind up their young men, who have no chance of ever having a family after the one child policy screwed up their gender balance so badly.

If you have to hitch yourselves to another state, I recommend Europe over China.

  • This is mostly true, haha. Though…

I held open a door in Canada and got berated for it by someone in their 40s. He wanted me to slam the door in his face, which I get if it was an apartment on the east side of Vancouver, but this was not the case, lol.

I’m always amazed that Canada has more extreme personality types than where I’ve lived in the US. Generally people are more nice, but the mean ones are jaw-droppingly mean, lol. Always gives me a bit of culture shock whenever it happens, which is probably once every 10 visits or so (I visit often).

The most recent one was someone who was extremely bothered that we rented out a space for a wedding and admonished the groom that he was using a community space an hour before it was set to open (we got permission from the landlords to use it as such.)

All that aside, Canada is not for sale, Fuck those cunts in the Trump administration, and you guys were fully justified for what you did in 1812. 😎

  • Oh, there are definitely protests here, you just aren’t hearing about them. They just aren’t making the international news. There are regular, frequent protests on the West Coast of the US, including Hawaii. Pro-federal worker protests, pro-union protests, anti-Trump/Musk protests, pro-canadian protests/celebrations. It’s on our local news often, but it rarely makes international news. People have been doing good work around here too, if you know what I mean. Stuff that enrages the fascists.
