Go with Bazzite, it tries to mimic SteamOS out of the box. Very easy install/setup process (easier than windows).

Bazzite is Fedora Kinoite with some extra stuff, Kinoite might be better for a desktop setup but either one is totally useable for gaming and desktop so don’t overthink it.

I think immutability actually takes away from the confusion and kind of makes the overall experience much more similar to windows where editing system files is something rarely done even among most power users.

I would suggest installing Fedora Kinoite, poke around it for 20-30min and if you find it too confusing then just putting windows back.

My point is that it’s not a big decision/commitment. And it’s trivial to undo!

Not positive but IIRC with Fedora you can change updates to weekly/monthly etc.

We’re simultaneously in a place where there are more options than ever, and yet it’s become increasingly clear there are really only 4-5 options.

Fedora Kinoite.

KDE Plasma (very Windows-ey) and it is “immutable” which means you can’t break it.

Someone else said Kubuntu which aesthetically will look the same and is also a good choice but if you want to start with a “just works” I recommend an immutable distro.

Wow, it (1.3mb) can fit on a single 3.5" floppy.

Just to be safe you may want to copy important files to a cloud storage AND usb drive before formatting the drive.

Also don’t overthink this and there is nothing wrong with Kubuntu, but Kinoite is going to be very similar and a little more resistant to n00b tinkering mistakes.

True, I edited my comment. I personally recommend the USB method (or if you have easy access to the internals- just swapping out an SSD).

It takes some doing, but you can live boot windows from a USB drive for those rare instances you need it. You can also just install it to a VM inside Linux (also not easy). But honestly these days the times where you’ll NEED Windows are few and far between (and getting fewer and farther).

Bazzite is a custom image of Kinoite, but I’m not surprised it’s taking off, it’s great.
