36·27 days agoIt’s new insofar as this is one big scrape. About 300TB iirc.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Okay, so I just found out my phone number company got my data exposed.
22·1 month agoWhat can I do to avoid getting my phone number “less breacheable”?
Don’t have a telephone number. Even if you never list it anywhere, a simple “brute force” attack (I.e. simply trying all possible combinations) will still work.
Apart from that, don’t share your phone numbers, which would basically make the number useless.
There is no longer a good way to keep a phone number really private.
Can you post your fstab?

Linux@lemmy.ml•Transferring data from Windows to Linux during migration
33·1 month agogiven the criticality of the stored data I would rather stay in Windows than risking data loss.
That’s what a solid backup strategy is there for. Which has nothing to do with the OS, so get into it.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux is awesome at home, but aren't y'all forced to use Windows at work?
2·1 month agoLinux is also awesome at work, if your workflow allows for it. Unfortunately, I cannot see the CAD/CAE world switching over (or rather bizarrely, back) to Linux anytime soon.
Is there anything not working at the moment? Or are there any new features you actually want from the new firmware?
NAS
Depends on what your plans are, an actual NAS-only machine or what develops into a general-purpose server. For the NAS part you’d only need a few services like FTP, SMB or whatever you want to run.
Those are easily configured on the command line.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Dumb question, but theoretically would it prevent Win exploits?
8·2 months agoNo. That still works of course, but there are other ways. You wouldn’t believe how much stuff your browser actually executes.
Checked your journal?
Are we talking about the software for hosting websites, or about their website? Big difference.

18·2 months agojust the browser
That’s still the main entry for malware.
KDE is a desktop environment, not a distro. You can therefore install it on most distros, or get variations of the distros (e.g. Kubuntu).
If you’re happy with it, why change? It’s really polished and customisable.
For the parts, impossible to say as we don’t know what you got in there.
It doesn’t, really. Completely different type of game.
Documents and media is your smallest problem. As you put it, you simply copy them over and that’s it.
No.

Linux@lemmy.ml•[SOLVED] my var directory on debian 13.1 has only 500 MiB free space and I cannot update flatpak anymore. How do I solve this?
4·4 months agoWell, what’s using your /var?

Same on Bitwarden.
