My only surprise comes from Meta once having a single decent employee.
I’m a little embarrassed to say I know someone who has worked there for a really long time, and they’re a genuinely awesome person. I don’t understand how they can still work there, and whenever we reconnect the first thing I ask is if they’re still working there. I’m not going to end our longstanding friendship over it, but it really makes me wonder.
In all likelihood it’s just a paycheck, I can’t imagine they’re a true believer, but I feel bad any time I start pressing too hard, because like I said they’re an otherwise excellent person.
Hey! Ok, so they had 2 decent employees. Cool, good to know.
And I get it, both it’s a paycheck and you’re just a well-paid cog in the machine. It’s the tragedy of the commons. They’re not the one making bots post AI slop or exploiting my data, so it’s not on them. But I expect that it’s a touchy place to say they work sometimes. But by working there they let other people do their jobs to help other people do their jobs to enable decisions like all the stuff that’s enshittifying everything. Such is life, sometimes.
